BlueYard Capital Research
Investment Thesis
BlueYard Capital is a technology pragmatist venture fund investing in only two kinds of technologies: those that move humanity toward utopia, and those that hold the line against oblivion. Founded in 2016 and headquartered in Berlin, Germany, the firm invests in "n-of-1 visions for an era of Black Swans"—unconventional companies addressing civilization-scale problems that others dismiss as too early, too risky, or too misunderstood.
The fund's philosophy explicitly rejects the venture industry's "buffet of already-obvious startups." Instead, BlueYard specializes in getting there early with capital in spaces the broader investment community hesitates: crypto infrastructure (2016, when it was synonymous with crime), AI chips (2018, before transformers), and defense (2023, post-Ukraine, backing hypersonic missile systems). Their thesis is deceivingly simple: they back technical founders working on hard problems that seem radioactive or deeply misunderstood to others.
Stage and Check Size
BlueYard invests primarily at pre-seed and seed stages:
- Pre-seed: $250K–$500K range for early-stage teams
- Seed: $1M–$5M+ for companies with working technology and initial validation
- Series A & Follow-ons: Selective participation in later rounds to support portfolio companies reaching critical milestones
Typical initial check size ranges from $500K–$5M, with willingness to follow large rounds when portfolio companies gain traction. The fund maintains significant follow-on reserves and actively doubles down on successful bets.
Lead Tendency
BlueYard exhibits a strong lead tendency with frequent co-leads. Often leads seed and early Series A rounds, frequently co-leads with other early-stage investors, and is willing to back contrarian positions others avoid, often being first institutional investor in misunderstood spaces.
Recent Activity (2025)
BlueYard's 2025 was exceptionally active, with portfolio companies raising over $1B in follow-on capital:
Major Milestone Rounds:
- Castelion (hypersonic defense): $100M Series A + $350M Series B
- Marvel Fusion (fusion energy): $120M Series B + $150M DOE project financing
- Chemify (compute-chemistry): $60M Series B
- Corintis (microfluidic cooling): $50M Series A+
- Privy (decentralized identity): Acquired by Stripe at scale (100M+ accounts)
New Portfolio Additions (2025): Added 13 new companies including: Aerska, Alterego, Boundless, CHOMP, Dost, Eigenblue, Foresight Data Machines, ManexAI, Miren, Number0, and ZeroPhase.
Fund Performance: BlueYard's €111M debut fund posted 76% gross IRR and 3.4× DPI, driven by early bets in crypto, AI, and defense.
