Black Operator Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Black Operator Ventures (Black Ops VC) is a mission-driven venture capital fund founded in 2021 by serial entrepreneurs James Norman and Sean Green with strategic guidance from mentor Joanne Wilson. The firm is the first all-Black GP team of active tech founders investing exclusively in early-stage Black-led companies. Their core thesis addresses one of the most significant capital gaps in venture capital: the Series A funding gap that disproportionately impacts Black entrepreneurs.
Black Ops recognizes that where other investors may see the unfamiliar, there exists a massive opportunity backed by exceptional talent, tenacity, and vision. They specialize in accelerating Black founders by providing not just capital, but operational support, network access, and strategic guidance to scale to venture-scale growth.

Strategic Positioning
Black Ops explicitly positions itself as solving the Series A funding gap for Black founders through three mechanisms:
- Seed Excellence: Providing oversubscribed, well-structured seed rounds that set portfolio companies up for Series A success
- Series A Preparation: Actively supporting portfolio companies through growth milestones to achieve Series A readiness
- Network Leverage: Using relationships with legendary investors and founders to support Series A fundraising
Market Context
Black Operator Ventures operates in a venture capital market where Black founders receive only ~1-2% of venture capital despite representing a much larger portion of the founder population. The fund is deliberately oversubscribing seed rounds to address information asymmetries and structural barriers that prevent exceptional Black founders from accessing capital.
The firm's backing by major institutional LPs (Northwestern Mutual, Bank of America, University of Michigan) and legendary VCs (Ben Horowitz, Fred Wilson, Brad Feld) signals serious institutional commitment to closing the racial wealth gap in venture capital.
